Adult Education/School On Wheels

Christian Appalachian Project -

My name is Barbara Hall, and 38 years ago I dropped out of school. I didn’t realize how important a good education was. Over the years it seemed like the jobs I really wanted required a High School Diploma or GED. I didn’t have either. I filled out application after application, just to get turned down because I didn’t have a High School Diploma. After missing out on a lot of good jobs, I decided to go to the Adult Learning Center and study for my GED. I had a really great teacher who helped me all along the way. I can’t express the excitement I felt when I got my Diploma! I tell everyone that if I can do it anyone can. It’s never too late!

Operating out of two central locations and several remote sites, CAP employees and volunteers each year offer hundreds of individuals an opportunity to increase their educational level.

All students are worked with on an individual basis, even in the classroom settings, and all work at their own pace. For many it is their first success with ‘school’ as they learn to read, or to master the skills and knowledge necessary for acquiring their GED.

The program removes transportation barriers to education by providing teachers that can come to the homes of students.

Many students are involved with Adult Education/School On Wheels in working toward their goal of employment. Other students have dreams of achieving a college education. When possible, CAP will award financial aid to students with that goal who are enrolling in college.
